What is whiplash?

Whiplash or whiplash-associated disorder (WAD) is a disorder that describes a specific injury or trauma to the neck. Whiplash is unique in the way it often causes trauma to a variety of tissues in the neck including;

  • Muscles
  • Joints
  • Ligaments
  • Tendons
  • Discs
  • Nerves and/or nerve roots

What causes whiplash?

Whiplash is caused by a rapid back and forth movement of the neck. It is most commonly associated it;

  • Car accidents
  • Sporting incidents 
  • Falls
  • Concussions
  • Physical abuse

Symptoms

  • Neck pain
  • Neck stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Upper back and shoulder pain
  • Dizziness
  • Tingling, numbness, and/or pins and needles in one or both arms
  • Fatigue and poor concentration
  • Jaw pain
  • Jaw stiffness

When someone is suffering from a concussion following a sporting incident or fall it can be difficult to assess if their symptoms are stemming from their concussion or their associated whiplash. If you are continuing to suffer from any of the above symptoms, or your symptoms of concussion persist longer than expected, it is recommended that you seek an assessment by an expert physiotherapist trained in whiplash conditions.

  • Postural education and awareness
  • Strengthening
  • Home exercise program

All patients will be provided will a full explanation of the assessment findings, expected outcomes, and treatment plan along with a tailored home exercise program. In some cases, treatment may involve liaising with additional health professionals as required.
